July 11 – Meet the Artist – Steve Cost

July 11, 2017     7:00 PM  at the Fellowship  (4901 Cornell St.)

Meet the Artist is proud to present Steven Cost — painter, designer, and professor.

Steven Cost is best known for his bold abstract art. Because he has spent a great deal of his art career as a graphic designer, the underlying composition of his art is his greatest strength. Several years ago, Cost added collage and assemblage to his body of work, and they have informed his latest abstract paintings which include a variety of textures and built-up areas. His preferred painting media is acrylics. Much of his recent work is inspired by music and sounds, through the process known as synesthesia. Also he subtly incorporates his spiritual philosophy that incorporates the Native American cultures among which he grew up. Many of his abstracts are reminiscent of mid century modern compositions he experienced during that time period, and is inspired from his travels, including a recent educational art trip to Italy.

Cost’s art has been shown in many galleries, exhibitions, and competitions; and his works reside in collections around the country. His own studio and gallery is located in the Galleries at Sunset Center, Amarillo, Texas. Besides being a full-time artist, he is presently an associate professor of art at Amarillo College, teaching design, drawing and painting.

Steven Cost has a bachelor of arts degree with a double major in graphic design and fine art. He later completed a master’s of arts in filmmaking and mass communications, a master’s of arts in painting, and an academic master’s of fine arts degree specializing in graphic design and computer animation. Cost worked for design firms and advertising agencies in Pensacola, Florida. Hwas the art director for the Amarillo Observer Magazine. He has studied at the University of California–Santa Cruz; Louisiana Tech University–Rome, Italy campus; Southwestern Oklahoma State University; and West Texas State University. Cost has been on the full-time faculty of Texas State Technical College, Southwestern Oklahoma State University and Amarillo College.

His work may be viewed in his art gallery in Amarillo and on his web site —www.stevencost.com
